Abbey Gate College, Saighton

Science Lab Refurbishment, Arts and Media Extension

Abbey Gate College is an independent, co-educational day school founded in 1977 by the Deeside House Educational Trust. The College provides a full academic, sporting and cultural education to pupils between the ages of 4 and 19. This project comprised two separate extensions to the existing teaching facilities at the senior school, located at Saighton Grange.

Set in the rolling Cheshire countryside, The Grange and its ancillary buildings were originally built for domestic use, albeit on a grand scale. As a converted stately home it provides a pleasant environment but it places limitations on working space.

These extensions are in the second phase of the College’s long term development plan for Saighton Grange, which started with the building of the Arts and Media Centre in 2001. This was designed to provide specialist accommodation for teaching and performance of Music and Drama, for the teaching of ICT and for the teaching and display of the visual arts. Facilities for Music, Drama and ICT were implemented but unfortunately due to funding constraints at the time the two teaching spaces for the visual arts were deferred.

The Arts and Media extension provides three new teaching bases for the visual arts, and a new Design and Technology suite. The former Technology classroom is refurbished and extended to address a long standing need for a further science laboratory and enhanced ancillary science accommodation.
