Children's Centre

Following our work on the first phase of Children's Centres, we were appointed by Cheshire County Council to develop a strategy for the Phase 2 delivery, comprising nineteen centres across the County. This involved feasibility studies and site appraisals on twenty eight locations, principally primary schools; completed within a period of three months. We shared the implementation of the programme with other design teams, undertaking design and delivery of eight projects between autumn 2006 and summer 2008.

Ash Grove Children's and Extended Service Centre was developed through the remodelling and extension of two surplus classrooms at the end of the Infant's Wing together with the adjacent corridor. A dedicated car park and new pedestrian entrance were formed through the remodelling of the existing service access point off Ash Grove adjacent to the Centre.

The design response proposed minimal structural alterations to form an internalised central core, housing the WCs and storage, surrounded by the occupied accommodation formed using masonry partition walls. Each occupied room is located to coincide with an external wall thus maximising the use of natural light and ventilation whilst reinforcing the link with the adjoining Foundation Stage Unit
