Styal Primary School, Wilmslow

Early Years Facility

Styal Primary School is located close to Manchester Airport, in the historic village of Styal. The old oak cottages of Styal were built in the 1820's. At the end of one of the terraces is Styal Primary School.

Styal Estate, including Quarry Bank Mill, Styal Village and the school is now owned and managed by The National Trust. The school buildings and site are leased by the school governing body from The National Trust. The area is designated as a Conservation Area and the original school building (from 1823) is Grade 2 listed.

The school identified the need for a dedicated Early Years facility to accommodate their reception and year one pupils, meeting the requirements set out in BB99 and supporting the current Early Years curriculum in terms of the indoor and outdoor environment.

A new facility was created within a woodland setting adjacent to an existing mobile classroom and overlooking the playing field.

The rectangular plan is simply elevated and the building is constructed in timber frame and clad in Siberian Larch with a clay tiled roof. Internally there is classroom, toilet facilities, store and lobby. An open porch provides a transition space from the indoor to the outdoor classroom.
