All Saints Church, Daresbury

Lewis Carroll Interpretation Centre

In Autumn 2009, Tweed Nuttall Warburton was shortlisted for a scheme for a new build ‘Lewis Carroll Interpretation Centre’, at All Saints Church, Daresbury.

The brief involved the analysis of an existing design, and provided the opportunity to submit alternative proposals.

TNWs concept scheme drew upon the existing visitor route to and through the church and involved innovative foundation proposals to ensure minimal disturbance to the potentially archaeologically rich ground and adjoining graveyard.

The scheme was also designed to allow the new building to lightly touch the existing structure through glazed connections, which enable the flow of natural light into the main body of the church to be retained. Views to the surrounding grounds and landscape beyond were provided through vertical strips of glazing, maximising wall space for a permanent installation of Lewis Carroll display and interpretation materials.

Internally the Centre is arranged to provide a large interpretation activity space, for flexible use, ideally suited to school groups and for exhibitions, together with supporting ancillary accommodation comprising an accessible WC, and welfare facilities appropriate for the expected visitor numbers.
