Combermere Abbey

New Village Masterplan

Combermere Abbey is unique. Containing a fascinating architectural history, it is one of a few buildings in England that explains the history of English building over a 700 year period. However, as with many historic houses, the Abbey is suffering escalating maintenance and repair costs. In this instance those costs are well beyond the revenue earning capacity of the Estate. So English Heritage suggested that they would support appropriate enabling development to raise the £3.5million needed to secure the building’s future. Together with Crosby Homes we won a select competition for our proposals to create a new village.

The planning of the village has been approached with the determination that it must settle in from the start as a positive contribution to the history of the area, the Abbey and the Landscape that surrounds it; adding its own special qualities that reflect the technologies and fashions of our own times. All this whilst being very sensitive to the local vernacular and the architecture of the Abbey and its estate.

Thorough analysis of the surrounding villages, spaces, and building styles have informed the design, creating a series of attractive and sensitively scaled spaces, which are clearly defined and form the core of the cohesive settlement character.

The village consists of one hundred homes of varying sizes, which include single bedroom apartments, family terraces, and larger detached dwellings.
