Helsby High School

Campus Strategy

In 2005, TNW were appointed by the Governors of Helsby High School to develop a new teaching facility at the School. The resultant new build E-Learning Centre comprises two double sized class bases, offices and ancillary accommodation arranged over two storeys. The design enables simultaneous teaching of two classes and has facilitated the introduction of innovative and flexible teaching methods.

Whilst undertaking a detailed analysis of the existing School infrastructure to locate the E-Learning Centre, various opportunities for the future long term development of the School were identified. This also highlighted the fundamental circulation issues posed by the existing narrow and linear main corridor

In 2007, TNW were commissioned by Children’s Services to undertake a Central Core Remodelling project to address the significant circulation problems that the School had experienced for many years. Various option appraisals were undertaken, leading to the introduction of a secondary circulation route through the heart of the School, coupled with a multi-use central breakout space around which the circulation flows. To facilitate this, a number of teaching spaces were affected, resulting in the design and construction of a new build two storey extension linked into the existing School infrastructure.

Commissioned during the early phases of the Central Core Remodelling, Section 7 addressed a further shortfall in the specialist accommodation required to cater for the influx of pupils from the closure of a nearby high school. Section 7 comprises a two storey teaching block housing two laboratories, IT rooms and staff offices.
